Lifescaper Coaching: "Spirituality vs. Religion"

by Jeffrey T. Brownstein, 12/5/08

Having relocated from New Jersey to North Carolina, one can't help noticing the emphasis on religion in the area. With a church located every 15 feet, you quickly get a sense for many people's interpretation of 'faith' in the South. But does being religious make a person spiritual?

Resoundingly, no, it does not.

Neale Donald Walsch crystallizes this idea in his book, Meditations from Conversations with God. He states, "Religion cannot stand Spirituality. It cannot abide it. For Spirituality may bring you to a different conclusion than a particular religion - and this no known religion can tolerate.

"Religion encourages you to explore the thoughts of others and accept them as your own. Spirituality invites you to toss away the thoughts of others and come up with your own."

Which of the two paths resonates most with feelings of empowerment, creativity, and self-expression?

Since the day after my Bar Mitzvah - my dad had put me in Hebrew school for 4 years, then said the decision to continue or not was solely mine - I have chosen to be purely spiritual (use of the word 'pure' unintended yet effective). What do you choose?
